With the score tied at 48-48, junior guard Caden Davis launched a three-ball as the buzzer sounded to give Hampton (19-7, 9-1 conference) a 51-48 victory over West Greene in a game that gave the Bulldogs the regular-season conference championship.

The Lady Bulldogs (20-6, 8-2 conference) also clinched a conference championship with a 59-34 win Friday night at Hampton Elementary. The Lady ‘Dogs got 24 points from Hannah Smith, who knocked down six treys.

“I saw it coming,” Davis said of his last-second heroics. “I got a good look at it as the ball was coming to me. It’s just an amazing feeling.”

The ‘Dogs held a 29-23 halftime advantage behind eight first-half points from sophomore Chase Davenport and seven from senior Jayden Nave. The Buffaloes rallied in the third period to tie the score at 40-40 as the last seconds of the quarter ticked away. Braden McCamey and Nave traded deuces to open the fourth quarter, and Elijah Williams sank a pair of free throws for the Buffs. That was answered by Davenport, who finished with a game-high 19 points.

A bucket by Nave gave Hampton a 46-44 lead, but Connor Campbell and Sam Wisecarver each hit one of two from the charity stripe to make it 46-45. Ayden Lamons’ deuce gave WG a 48-46 lead, but with 49.1 seconds left in regulation, Nave hit a jump shot to tie the score at 48-48.

“We needed this win to break the tie with South Greene,” Bulldogs head coach Ned Smith said. “Davis hit that big shot after a big offensive rebound gave us a second shot. He played well and got 11 big points.”
