Newly hired firemen, or rookies as they are called by their co-workers, have been traveling throughout the region receiving educational training to prepare them for their new careers.
They had their scheduled stop in Elizabethton on Thursday, where their training focused on ladders ranging from aluminum extension ladders to the Elizabethton Fire Department ladder truck.
The opportunity gives the local fire department not only the opportunity to pour knowledge into the rookies who may be coming to their department, but also to new hires going to work in departments from Newport to Bristol.
With the rookies paired off into five groups, the day allowed for instruction from different EFD personnel as the rookies moved through five stations with different tasks at each.
Once rookie school is completed, each new hire will return to their home base, where they will start work in their full-time shift units.
