Harriet “Martha” Small, 90, Hampton, known to many as Nanny or Granny, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 2, 2025. She was born to the late Willis and Anna (Long) Goodspeed.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Eugene Small; and two daughters, Martha J. Collins and Linda S. Small.
She is survived by her son, William “Billy” Small; and grandchildren, Ann “Michelle” Odom (Michael), Rachel L. Ray, Richard “Peeper” Collins (Sara), Benjamin S. Collins (Kristie), and Samuel DeLorenzo. Several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren also survive.
Granny loved the Lord and had a heart for missions. She traveled to several countries spreading the gospel and loving others. She also taught the women’s Sunday school class at Meadowview Baptist Church, Butler, Tennessee, where she was a member for more than 40 years until she moved to Stoney Creek, where she was graciously welcomed in and became a member of Holly Springs Free Will Baptist Church.
A service to celebrate the life of Martha will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 2025, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Eric Sams and Dr. Alan King officiating. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2025, in Crosswhite Cemetery, Butler. Active pallbearers will be Michael Odom, Zach Odom, Greg Odom, Sam DeLorenzo, Richard Collins, and Ben Collins. Honorary pallbearers will be her church families, Holly Springs Free Will Baptist Church and Zion Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home prior to the service.
