JOHNSON CITY — Officers of the Johnson City Police Department (JCPD) arrested Dr. Atif Atyia, 68, of Jonesborough, on March 4, and charged him with aggravated rape and three counts of sexual battery.
The arrest follows an investigation launched by the JCPD Special Victims Unit on Feb. 19. According to JCPD, a patient under Dr. Atyia’s care reported that she was raped during an office visit.
As part of the investigation, JCPD executed a search warrant at Atyia’s practice on West Market Street. The JCPD, working in collaboration with the Office of the District Attorney General, presented the case to the Washington County Grand Jury, which issued a true bill.
Atyia is being held at the Washington County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond.
The JCPD is asking any other potential victims to come forward and contact Sgt. Shane Williams with the Special Victims Unit at (423) 434-6110 or Crime Stoppers at (423) 930-6535.
