The Salvation Army of Johnson City continues to face challenges as its shelter remains closed due to an ongoing gas leak. Since the issue began on Friday, Feb. 21, 48 shelter guests have been evacuated and are currently being housed at The Salvation Army’s administrative building and a local hotel.
Despite these difficulties, The Salvation Army successfully helped three shelter guests obtain permanent housing last week. However, gas pipes at the shelter building need to be replaced, and repairs are estimated to be completed by Friday, March 7.
As this situation persists, The Salvation Army is seeking continued assistance from the community to support shelter program participants during this challenging period.
The community can help with financial contributions, which are needed to help cover the costs of hotel rooms, staffing, and meals. Contributions can be made at www.SalvationArmyJohnsonCity.org.
Also, volunteers are needed. Individuals are needed at The Salvation Army facility on West Walnut to assist with operations, meal service, and other essential tasks. If you are interested in volunteering, please call 423-926-2101.
Meals are also needed for shelter guests until the facility is reopened. If you or your organization can provide meals, please contact Major Maureen Diffley at 423-926-2101.
The Salvation Army also asks for prayers that the gas leak repairs are completed on schedule and that the shelter can safely reopen.
“We remain deeply grateful for the generosity and kindness of the Johnson City community,” said Major Maureen Diffley, corps officer of The Salvation Army of Johnson City. “As we navigate these ongoing challenges, we continue to rely on the support of our neighbors to help us provide essential services to those in need. Your contributions—whether through financial gifts, volunteering, meal donations, or prayers—make an incredible impact.”
