East Tennessee State University is hosting a Square Dance Extravaganza featuring the high-energy, old-time Hogslop String Band and an opening performance by the student-led Twin Taters.
The event will run from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12, in the D.P. Culp Student Center ballroom. Sponsored by Buctainment, it is free with a valid ETSU ID for students and staff. The public is invited to attend by purchasing a ticket at the door for $20 (cash or credit cards accepted).
Attendees are encouraged to put on their dancing shoes for some foot-stomping, fast-paced fun, led by some of the best old-time bands in the region.
The Hogslop String Band showcases the talents of singer and fiddler Kevin Martin; guitarist, harmonica player, and singer Gabriel Kelley; banjo player and singer Daniel Binkley; and bassist and all-round entertainer Pickle.
They thrive on crossing genres, casting off the confines of straight old-time and bluegrass, delving into a deep repertoire of rock, folk, psychedelic, and original numbers. After making their Grand Ole Opry debut in 2022, the Hogslop String Band has begun to cross the lines of more than one genre.
Twin Taters is an old-time string band in the Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Roots Music Studies program at ETSU. All members of the band are professional musicians and have come to ETSU to study music in more depth. As part of the old-time music program, they focus on specific movements or events in the long, beautiful story of American folk music and recreate the sounds and styles of the music of the 1920s and ’30s.
ETSU is home to a vibrant community, hosting dozens of concerts, exhibitions, and performances throughout the year, and March is packed with events.
