When Michelle Shields transferred from Elizabethton to Unaka, expectations were high, but no one could have predicted the immediate impact she would have on the Lady Rangers. Under the guidance of Coach Kenneth Chambers, Shields has not only stepped into a leadership role but has also been the driving force behind Unaka’s remarkable 23-win season, scoring nearly 600 points along the way.
Shields has been a natural fit for the Rangers, meshing seamlessly with teammates Lauren Lund and Kalli Sheppard. The trio has become a lethal threat from beyond the arc, keeping defenses on their toes with their consistent 3-point shooting. Their chemistry and ability to stretch the floor have been key components in Unaka’s offensive success.
Another standout player for the Lady Rangers has been freshman Brooklyn Campbell. Despite her youth, Campbell has embraced the role of a star player, proving to be not only a deep shooting threat but also a crucial asset in rebounding and ball-handling. Her poise and confidence on the court have made her an integral part of the team’s success this season.
Inside the paint, Keyona Hague and Katlyn Dugger have been relentless, controlling the boards and creating second-chance opportunities for Unaka. Dugger, in particular, stepped up in the regional championship game, knocking down two clutch 3-pointers to tie the score and give the Rangers a shot at the title. Their efforts on the glass have been instrumental in Unaka’s ability to dominate opponents.
Shields has consistently been the Lady Rangers’ top scorer, setting the tone from her very first game when she dropped 24 points. Within just three games, she had already racked up 81 points. Throughout the season, she delivered multiple 30-point performances, including 31 against Oakdale and 30 against West Greene. Shields thrives in high-pressure situations, proving time and time again that the tougher the competition, the better she plays.
Her stellar performances earned her numerous accolades, including All-Conference, All-District and All-Regional honors. She was also named MVP of the district tournament, a testament to her influence on Unaka’s success.
Senior Lauren Lund has been the team’s anchor, bringing experience and leadership to a squad that not only won 23 games but also secured a sub-state playoff victory, a district championship and a runner-up finish in the regional tournament. Her presence has been invaluable, ensuring that the team remains poised and focused in critical moments.
Alongside the standout performances of Shields, Campbell, Sheppard, Hague and Dugger, Unaka has also benefited from the valuable minutes played by Emma Douglas and Ari Sutherland. Their contributions off the bench have provided key support in crucial moments, adding depth to the roster and giving the Lady Rangers an even stronger competitive edge.
With a talented roster and a promising future, Coach Kenneth Chambers and the Unaka Lady Rangers have plenty to look forward to. With Shields, Campbell, Sheppard, Hague, Dugger, Douglas and Sutherland leading the way, Unaka’s basketball program is in great hands. The Lady Rangers have shown that they can compete at the highest level, and their journey is far from over.
