The Elizabethton Police Department is investigating a shooting at a city hotel that left a 24-year-old woman dead.

The EPD responded to Traveler’s Inn, 505 W. Elk Ave., at around 7:50 Tuesday morning.

At the scene, officers found Suman Preet Sarkaria, Elizabethton, in a hotel room with a gunshot wound. She was transported to Johnson City Medical Center, where she later died, Bowers said.

“We are initially looking at this as a suicide,” Bowers said.

Officers were alerted to the emergency by a witness to the shooting.

“A person who was in the room with her went to the lobby to call 911,” Bowers said.

The incident is still under investigation, but there are no signs of foul play, Bowers said.

No further information could be released at this time.
