Parent portal provides access to student performance, attendance

The days of “playing hooky” or “forgetting report cards at school” are coming to a close for students at both city and county schools.
The implementation of a parent portal with accessibility online and directly to parents’ mobile devices is opening up a new channel of communication between parents, educators and administrators.
Skyward Family Access software has been operational for most county schools since late Fall and went live in city schools today.
The parent portal makes it possible for parents to view their child’s grades, attendance, school calendar, discipline information, and test scores at some schools.
“The whole goal is to help our parents be more informed about their children,” said Dr. Corey Gardenhour, director of city schools. “We want to increase communication with parents, and we think it will make a better environment for kids to operate in.”
Through its Skylert technology, parents can receive instant notification if their child is absent.
In county schools, parents that have enrolled are reportedly enjoying the benefits of the program.
“From what I’m hearing, parents are really liking it,” said Ken Thomas, student information management coordinator with the Carter County school system. “They can check students’ grades and absenteeism and can receive notifications. It’s gotten a lot of positive feedback.”
For information on how to register in the county, contact your child’s school or visit carterk12.net.
Parents of students in city schools may use the link on the home page at ecschools.net to register and get more information about the program.
