Douglas Andrew Shipley, 54, of Elizabethton, passed away Thursday, July 28, 2016, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Marion “Bud” and Virginia Stout Shipley.
Doug was employed at White’s Grocery and Mor-Flo Industries prior to his retirement due to disability. He was a member of Riverview Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Terri James Shipley; his daughter, Nicole Duvall and husband Josh; his step-children, Amber McElyea and husband Adam, Jordan Lambert and wife Erica and Daniel “Opie” Lambert; his step-grandchildren, Neelynn and J.J. McElyea, ShyAnne Tuelle, Brayden and Andrew Lambert; his sister, Debbie Hyder; his brother and sister-in-law, Dexter and Donna Shipley; his niece, Danielle; his nephews, Dillon Shipley and Casey Blevins; two aunts, Bea Ritchie and Kathleen; and his mother-in-law, Joyce James.
Funeral services for Douglas Andrew Shipley will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, August 1, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Larry Shorter officiating. Music will be provided by Carmon Cook and Dillon Shipley. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 2, in the D.O. Johnson Cemetery (Dividing Ridge). Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10:20 a.m. Tuesday, will be Chris Tester, Branden Parlier, Bobby James III, Alan Scalf, James Honeycutt, Jerry Proffitt, Rick Elliott and Shane Campbell. Honorary pallbearers will be his church family. The family would like to thank two special nurses on the 5th floor ICU at Vanderbilt, Mary Davidson and Marcus Williams, and his special family members, James and Poni Gentry. George W. Trent Jr.
George W. Trent Jr., 76, of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Savior on Wednesday, July 27, 2016, from Johnson City Medical Center. George was born in Benham, Ky., to the late George W. Trent Sr. and Gladys Fritz Trent. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Glenda Faye Trent, on November 26, 1983; a brother, Curtis Trent, on December 30, 2003; and three sisters, Shirley Powers, Beulah Holcombe and Gladys Holcombe.
George was a graduate of Benham High School, Class of 1958, where he played high school football. He served as Senior Vice President of Carter County Bank for over 40 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Elizabethton, where he was a past treasurer and was a former choir member. George was a former board member of the Elizabethton Housing Authority and a former member of the Elizabethton Civitan Club. He loved to fish, watch NASCAR and old westerns, and he especially loved his Tennessee Vols.
Those left to cherish his memory include two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Ray Dwyer of Simpsonville, S.C., and Kimberly and Dwayne Fair of Cookeville, Tenn.; one son and daughter-in-law, Curtis and Rosemary Trent of Maryville, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Trent Dwyer of Simpsonville, Cayden Fair and Drew Fair, both of Cookeville, Tenn., Michael Trent and wife Ashley of Maryville, Tenn., and Bethany Spelce and husband Alex of Knoxville, Tenn.; two great-grandchildren, Audrey Trent and Emily Trent, both of Maryville, Tenn.; a sister-in-law, Barbara Trent of Elizabethton; and a brother-in-law, Jack Powers of Irmo, S.C. Several nieces and nephews also survive, as well as his former wife, Ramona Trent of Elizabethton.
A service to honor the life of George W. Trent Jr. will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 30, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Raymond Amos Sr. officiating. Music will be provided by David Arney. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service. The graveside service will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Geraldine Waycaster Arnett
Geraldine Waycaster Arnett, 69, of Morganton, N.C., passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at her residence after an extended illness. Born in Roan Mountain, Tenn., on December 17, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Paul Waycaster and Annie Markland Waycaster.
Mrs. Arnett is survived by her brother, Roy Waycaster, and sisters, Betty Epley and Linda Woodell.
In addition to her parents, Geraldine was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Billy Jack Arnett; a brother, Jerry Lee Waycaster; and a sister, Pauline Jones.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. Saturday, July 30, at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at noon in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Pastor Charlie Crump officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Cecil Tolley
Cecil Tolley, 75, a life-long resident of the Fairview Community in Hampton, entered into eternal rest with our Lord on Tuesday, July 26, 2016, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness and complications from a massive heart attack.
Cecil, who was of the Freewill Baptist Faith, attended Fairview Freewill Baptist Church as a child. He was the last surviving son of 13 children of the late Jim and Posie Whitehead Tolley. A student at Fairview School and a Hampton Bulldog, Cecil left school in his teenage years to care for his ailing mother.
A life-long farmer, Cecil served many years at Johnson City’s Magnavox Plant and retired due to visual disability from the Unicoi County Gas Utility District. He cherished listening to the county police scanner, telling jokes, spending time with his family while eating Long John Silver’s fish or Kentucky Fried Chicken and loving his wife of 54 years, Georgia Blevins Tolley.
Cecil, affectionately known as “Pops,” “Papaw,” Pap,” and “Old Man,” was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Victoria Faith McQueen; his brothers, infant Lonnie, Ronnie, Carl, Mack, Ken, Dillard and Earl Tolley; and his sisters, infants Catherine and Christine Tolley, Faye (Bill) O’Shaughnessy, Ethel (Oscar) Coffey and Irene (Lloyd) Davis.
In addition to his wife, Cecil is survived by their children, Betty and Jobe Tolley, Hampton, Kitty Tolley, Hampton, Cecil Wayne Tolley, Hampton, Shelby and David McQueen and Annie and Danny McQueen. Others include his grandchildren, Danielle and Abigail Bates, Jobe Tolley, Courtney Tolley, Alexandria, Katarina and Izabella McQueen, as well as his great-grandchildren, Lucas Bates, Nathan Peters, Elana and Joshua Furches; a special cousin, Mabel Tolley; a special nephew, Norman Coffey; and many other nieces, nephews and extended family.
A graveside service will take place on Saturday, July 30, at 12 noon at the Tolley-Cornett Cemetery in the Fairview Community with Rev. Shane Whittemore and Rev. Henry Berry officiating with Cecil’s favorite songs of “Great Speckled Bird,” “Me and God” and “I’ll Fly Away” being played. Active pallbearers will be Billy Brown, Junior Blevins, Bobby Furches, Nathan Peters and his sons-in-law, Jobe Tolley, Danny and David McQueen. Honorary pallbearers will be Mabel Tolley, Norman Coffey, Landon Lingerfelt, Robert “Bob” Potter and the current and previous staff of the Unicoi County Gas Utility District. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet the family at the Tolley-Cornett Cemetery off Whittemore Road at 11:50 a.m. Saturday. Cleo A. “Addie” Freeman-Arrowood
Cleo A. “Addie” Freeman-Arrowood, 64, of Pilot Mountain, N.C., formerly of Roan Mountain, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early hours of July 25, 2016, at Pruitt Healthcare in Elkins, N.C. She was born March 14, 1952 to Jake and Delia Freeman at Banner Elk, N.C. She grew up in Roan Mountain.
Cleo attended Cloudland High School. After she left home she attended other schools and received her diploma and also attended some college. She was a CNA in her final years on the job. She lived in many different states since her first husband was in the Air Force. She worked at a variety of jobs. She attended church faithfully and was very active. She was a member of Doe River Baptist Church in Elizabethton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Joe T. Arrowood, in 2015.
Survivors include a son, Michael Heaton (Faith) of Virginia; a daughter, Candi Watson (Eddie) of Pilot Mountain, N.C.; granddaughters, Taylor, Aaron, Samantha and Alexia; a great-grandson, Ezekiel Skye; one brother, Jerry Freeman (Sherry) of Elizabethton; four sisters, Janet Dameron (Richard) of Hickory, N.C., Brenda Hitechew (V.L.) of Roan Mountain, Sandra Hoss (Robert) of Elizabethton, and Beverly Jane Hasson (Eric) of Oklahoma. A number of aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins also survive.
It was her wish to be cremated. There will be a memorial service at Lower Shell Creek Christian Church on Saturday, July 30. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. with a short service following, conducted by a good friend, Herman Crumley, from Doe River Baptist Church.
The family wishes to thank all her caregivers, the nursing home, hospital and doctor offices for their care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity.
Herman David King Jr.
Herman David King Jr., 62, of Hampton, passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2016, at his residence.
He was born June 17, 1954 in Carter County to Herman David King Sr. and the late Beulah Stevens King, who died October 25, 1996.
Mr. King was an electrician. He was of the Baptist Faith.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Cameron Stone; a sister, Jennifer King; and a brother, Donnie King.
Survivors include three daughters, Erica Dawn King, Amber Verna King and Kelli Starr King; four grandchildren; his brothers and sisters, Gary King and wife Dana, Ronnie King, Debbie King and husband Frank, Cindi King, Dina Coulter and husband Jimmy, Traci Williams, Brian King, Regina Livingston and husband Jeff, Mikki King and Brandon King; several nieces and nephews; and his special friend who was like a brother to him, Larry Kavanaugh.

John Love “J.L.” Blackwell
John Love “J.L.” Blackwell, 81, of Elizabethton, passed away at Hillview Health Care on Thursday, July 23, 2016.
He was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Henry and Destie Johnson Blackwell. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Blackwell; sisters, Goldie Blackwell Pierce, Virginia Potter and Opie Osborne; and brothers, Coeburn Blackwell, Claude Blackwell, Elmer Blackwell and C.J. Blackwell.
John worked as a millwright. His hobby was working on yard equipment.
John was a U.S. Air Force veteran and served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Big Springs Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Thelma Murray Blackwell; three children, Dale Morton and wife Kim, Kingsport, Ed Blackwell and wife Becky, Johnson City, and Ted Blackwell, of the home; two grandchildren, Summer Morton and Brandi Blackwell; one great-grandchild, Kellsie Hicks; two sisters, Ruby Blackwell Caraway, Elizabethton, and Edith Blackwell Duckworth, Oak Ridge; and several nieces and nephews.
The service for Mr. Blackwell will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Glen Layfield officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m., prior to the service. Peggy Louise Roberts
Peggy Louise Roberts, 81, of Watauga, Tenn., passed away Monday, July 25, 2016, at Hillview Health Center following an extended illness. She was the daughter of the late Robert Lee and Dixie Lee Barnett Wells.
Mrs. Roberts was a homemaker and she enjoyed sewing and gardening. She was a member of Elizabethton Church of Christ.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, William G. Roberts, and two brothers, Coy Wells and O’Dell Wells.
Those left to cherish her memory include two sons, Steven Roberts and wife Diane and Michael Roberts and wife Jan; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service to honor the life of Peggy Louise Roberts will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 31, at the Elizabethton Church of Christ with Mr. Roby Ellis, minister, officiating. Julia “June” Dugger
Julia “June” Dugger, 85, went on to be with her Lord Jesus on Saturday, July 23, 2016, in Greeneville, Tenn., after an extended illness.
She was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Elijah and Blonnie Buckles.
Ms. Dugger was a member of Caldwell Springs Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Mack and Jim Buckles; her sister, Ethel Smith; and her daughter, Shirley Dugger Williams.
Surviving family members are her son, Stephen Dugger (Ginger); her grandchildren, Ashley Dugger Estep (Nick) and Blake Dugger (Brandi); her five great-grandchildren, Gracie Estep, Levi and Cooper Estep, Jackson Nidiffer and Ava Dugger; and several nieces and nephews.

Steven Michael Williams, 55, of Elizabethton, passed away Saturday, July 23, 2016, at Duke University Hospital after a courageous battle of an extended illness.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Mark Williams and Peggy Pierce Williams.
Steven was a 1979 graduate of Unaka High School and a retired employee of the Carter County Highway Department. He attended Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church. His hobbies were riding dirt bikes, music and playing with his grandkids.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Darrell Williams.
Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Sherry Coffey Williams; two children, Joshua Williams, Kingsport, and Whitney Hankins and husband Jonathan, Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Natalee Williams, Caleb Hankins, Gracie Williams, A.J. Williams and Joshua Hankins; his brother, Terry Williams, Elizabethton; his sister, Lisa Brown and husband Keith, Hickory, N.C.; and two nieces, Kelly and Jessica Brown, both of Hickory, N.C.

Shirley A. Kelly
Shirley A. Kelly, 62, of Johnson City, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 23, 2016. She departed this life during the afternoon from the Johnson City Medical Center. Shirley was born on March 23, 1954 in Elizabethton, Tenn., to the late Eugene Kyte and Mary Potter. She was a native of Elizabethton but lived in Johnson City for seven years.
Shirley was of the Baptist faith. She found great joy in fishing with her beloved husband and cooking. Shirley adored butterflies and collected many items that were adorned with them. During her life, Shirley helped many people. She was a sweet woman with a loving heart that was full of compassion.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her brothers, Jimmy and Donald Potter; grandmother, Lena Vines; and stepfather, Martin Potter.
Those left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of five years, Curtis Ray Kelly; sisters, Sandra J. Stout (Jim Stout), Lorrie Ann Wilson (Earl J. McAlyea) and Patty A. Potter (Dwayne Cruze); brothers, Danny R. Potter (Virginia Higgins) and Johnny Potter; special sister-in-law, Wanda Sue Kelly-Arwood; special friends, Brenda Grindstaff, Donna Baird and Linda Lewellyn; several nieces and nephews; and her furbaby, Emily Rose.

Bobbie Jean McQueen
Bobbie Jean McQueen, 81, was delivered to her heavenly home on Sunday, July 24 2016. A resident of the Blackbottom Community for several decades, Bobbie Jean had lived the past seven years in Room 18A at Hermitage Health Care where she spent many hours traveling the halls, praying with the residents and staff and spreading the love of the Lord.
Bobbie Jean attended the Bible Church, Johnson City, Tenn., for several years and was of the Pentecostal Faith. A native of Unicoi County, she was a homemaker, loved “Little House on the Prairie” and Disney’s “Old Yeller” and rejoiced in taking care of those around her.
A daughter of the late Bessie Laughren and Jess Winters, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Lee McQueen, a granddaughter, Victoria Faith McQueen, her son, Edward Gilbert, Jr., her “Prayer Warrior” sisters, Willie Norris, Elva Lee Harrell, Etta Sue McCourt, Berdie Winters and Pauline Tester.
Survivors of Kenneth and Jean, include sons, Randy and Nona McQueen, Danny and Annie McQueen, David and Shelby McQueen, all of Elizabethton, and Bobbie Jean’s son, Larry and wife, Sydney Gilbert, Johnson City. Also, another twin son and daughter of Bobbie Jean, Billy Harrell and Betty Arrowood, who were adopted by her sister Elva Lee.
Surviving grandchildren include, Brandi, Julie, Brandon, Alexandria, Katarina, Izabella and a host of extended grandchildren and great-grandchildren, special friends and family.
Friends may visit at the residence of her son and daughter-in-law, David and Shelby McQueen, 818 Ash Street, Elizabethton.
A graveside service will be conducted for Bobbie Jean McQueen on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at 1:45 p.m. in the Mountain Home National Cemetery, Mountain Home, Tennessee with The Cox Family officiating. Music will also be under the direction of the Cox Family. Active pallbearers will be Pete Taylor, Jason Taylor, Robert “Bob” Potter, Hugh Thomason and Steve Estep. Shonette Mardell Tolley, 81, of Hampton, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 24, 2016. She was born January 19, 1935 in Akron, Ohio to Frank and Lillian Cutlip.
Shonette was a graduate of Hampton High School and was retired from the United States Postal Service. She was an active member of Rittertown Baptist Church where she had served as Minister of Music for many years.
Mrs. Tolley was preceded in death by her father, Frank Cutlip; her sister, Rannell Orefield; and her granddaughter, Amber Shaw Calhoun.
Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Herman Tolley; her mother, Lillian Cutlip; sons, Keith and Leon (Rebecca), and daughter, Patty; granddaughters, Tracy Guy (Jeff) and Tammy Jordan; grandsons, Mitchell, R.J. and Ezra; great-grandchildren, Lane and Timber Shaw, Jeffrey, River and Rudy Guy; brother, Charles Cutlip (JoAnn); and special friends, Garry Smith and Shirl Davis and Simon.

A service to honor the life of Shonette Tolley will be held on Wednesday, July 27, at Rittertown Baptist Church in Hampton with the Rev. Richard Stout officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. with the service following at 6 p.m. The graveside service and interment will be held immediately following the service at the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Keith Tolley, Leon Tolley, Lane Shaw, Timber Shaw, Garry Smith and Jeff Guy. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Cutlip, Albert Ellison, Louie Greene, Tom Little, Gene Orefield and Gary Trivett.
