Fire destroyed a camper and carport at 442 Cripple Creek Loop at around 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. Watauga Volunteer Fire Department and Carter County Sheriff’s Department officers responded to the fire, which was brought under control within 10 minutes of their arrival. The fire spread to the surrounding woods, but was quickly contained. The 20-foot camper and 20-foot by 12-foot shed were owned by Angela Birdsong, who was not at home at the time of the fire. Birdsong said she had just put a new “pretty green metal roof” on the shed. The cause is still undetermined and is under investigation. There was no insurance on the camper and carport.
