Relay For Life rallies hundreds of community members forming dozens of teams each year to walk throughout the night in a battle against cancer.
This year, Carter County Relay For Life has 37 teams from throughout the community that have worked to raise money for cancer research.
“We have lots of new teams this year,” said publicity chair Kathy Thomason. “We have worked to think outside the box to raise excitement in the community to get more people interested in Relay.”
The teams’ focus doesn’t just center around the night of the Relay. Teams work throughout the year planning fundraisers, holding special events and collecting donations for the American Cancer Society.
“The teams at the track the night of the Relay are not the only teams that have worked to help raise money this year,” Thomason said. “We have teams who have been active through the year doing fundraisers and collecting for the Relay For Life.”
For example, the Hampton Elementary and Hampton High School teams collected change in change jars in the main office. The Unaka High School team sold paper cutouts during school events to raise money.
“We had more people throughout the year working to raise money this year,” Thomason said.
