David Paul Roark, 75, of Roan Mountain, passed away on Wednesday, August 20, 2014, at Johnson City Medical Center.
Mr. Roark was a native of Roan Mountain and a son of the late Walter and Viola Johnson Roark. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gail Roark, on May 31, 2008, and a granddaughter, Victoria Herndon.
Mr. Roark was a graduate of Nashville Auto Diesel College and retired from Yellow Freight Trucking Company as a truck driver and also was a relief driver for FEMA. He attended Lower Shell Creek Christian Church and was a lifelong NASCAR fan. He was a member of Dashiell Lodge #238 F&AM Masonic Lodge of Elizabethton and was a United States Army veteran.
Survivors include a daughter, Amy Herndon and husband Brent, Winston-Salem, N.C.; two grandchildren, Will and Callie; brothers and sisters, Mary Lou Brengard of Arizona, Johnny Roark and wife Burma, Clairmont, N.C., Margaret Hegglar and husband George, Lancaster, S.C., and Lonnie Roark, Mooresville, N.C.; and a very special friend, Vivian Moore, Roan Mountain. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to honor the life of Mr. Roark will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 23, at Lower Shell Creek Christian Church in Roan Mountain with Mr. Gerald Holly officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service. The graveside service will follow in the Perry Cemetery in the Shell Creek Community of Roan Mountain. Military Honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Johnson City Medical Center, Mountain States Hospice and Dr. Jeff Farrow, for all the care shown to Mr. Roark during his illness.
