Police were called to a Hampton convenience store on Thursday after an employee reported a customer tried to use counterfeit currency to make a purchase.
Carter County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Paul Morrell was dispatched to the Roadrunner Marketat 4953 Highway 19E, Hampton, shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday. Morrell said he spoke with an employee of the store who told him a man had tried to pay for gas with a counterfeit $20 bill.
“(The employee) advised that she checked the bill with her detector pen twice, and it marked as a counterfeit,” Morrell said in his report. “She advised him that he could not have the bill back, and that if he wanted he could wait there until an officer arrived.”
Morrell said the employee told him the man did not want to wait and left the store.
The incident is the latest of several reports of counterfeit cash in Elizabethton and Carter County.
