Volunteer firefighters are ordinary people who give their time to do extraordinary things for their community.
A group of Roan Mountain residents is working to honor their local heroes’ service by raising money to help their volunteer fire department buy needed equipment.
The Roan Mountain Citizens Club is holding a benefit community yard sale and is asking others in the community to help out.
Kelsey Tipton, one of the residents involved in the fundraiser, said the Citizen’s Club is trying to help spread the word about the Roan Mountain Volunteer Fire Department’s needs and help the organization out financially.
“The most crucial item the fire department needs is new gear for each fireman,” Tipton said. “The gear they are working with now is outdated and no longer up to code for their safety.
”We want our volunteer firemen to be safe and this is one way we can help,” she added.
All proceeds from the sale will go to the Roan Mountain Volunteer Fire Department, she said.
Tipton said the Citizen’s Club is accepting donations of items to be placed in the yard sale. “We are accepting all kinds of items, anything is accepted,” she said. “We will be accepting items all the way up to the event.”
The benefit yard sale will be held on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Old Lower Shell Creek Christian Church, which is located on Highway 19E.
Those wishing to donate items for the sale to benefit the volunteer fire department can drop off the items at Lower Shell Creek Christian Church on Thursdays from 1 to 6 p.m. or on Saturdays from 8 a.m. until noon.
