Mrs. Hattie Joyce Julian, 72, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 19, 2014, at Holston Valley Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Looney C. and Lena Pearl Estep Garland and was born in Carter County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Donie Pierce Julian, on October 27, 2009; two sisters, Ramona Davenport and Jean White; and one brother, Verdell Garland.
Mrs. Julian was a member of the East Side Freewill Baptist Church. She was a retired school teacher following 29 years of service with the Carter County School System.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Renita and James Bunten, Elizabethton, and Jennifer and James W. Hughes Jr., Elizabethton; six grandchildren, Bethany Hughes, James W. Hughes III, Amara Bunten, Rachel Hughes, Aundria Bunten and Alena Bunten; and a sister, JoAnn Garland, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to honor the life of Mrs. Julian will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, September 21, at East Side Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Justin Deaton officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service, or at the home at other times. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Monday, September 22, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be James W. Hughes III and other family and friends. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the church at 12:45 p.m. to go in procession to the cemetery. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to East Side Freewill Baptist Church Food Pantry, 704 Siam Road, Elizabethton, TN 37643.
