A Carter County corrections officer was fired after police say he was caught attempting to smuggle contraband into the Carter County Detention Center.
Carter County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Jeff Markland said on Sept. 28, Corrections Officer Kenneth E. Turner Jr. was “caught attempting to bring contraband along with narcotics to inmates within the detention center.”
Markland said officers seized the contraband before Turner was able to bring it inside the facility.
Following the incident, Turner was terminated from his employment with the department, Markland said. Turner had worked at the facility for approximately 11 months.
The case has been turned over to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Markland said, adding charges against Turner are pending at this time.
Markland said the department received a tip that Turner was bringing in contraband, but he declined to say what it was Turner was attempting to smuggle into the facility.
Further information is not being released at this time as the investigation is ongoing.
