During cross country races, a race official usually gives out a number when you cross the finish line and that is the place you finished in the race. On Thursday at the Three Rivers meet at Doe River Gorge in Hampton, Sullivan East’s Paige Roberts noticed something kind of odd when she looked at hers.
Roberts thought it was a misprint when she saw the No. 1 on her note, and there was a reason she was given that particular number.
Roberts ended up winning the race, but was aided by a very unfortunate wrong turn on an unfamiliar course by Elizabethton superstar Maci Shell. As a result, it was Roberts, not Shell, who ended up being crowned Three Rivers girls champion.
