Gary Dale Grant, 62, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 2, 2014, while at home, surrounded by loved ones, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Gary was born on March 20, 1952 in Monroe, La., but had lived most of his life in Elizabethton. He was the son of the late Willie Grant and Charlie Mae Bowman Grant, who resides at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Terry Grant, and a sister, Wanda Simmons.
Mr. Grant was a retired pipefitter and also taught his son the trade. He was of the Christian faith and enjoyed reading and riding his motorcycle.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife of 43 years, Kathy Stevens Grant, of the home; a son, Steven Grant and wife Angela, Elizabethton; one granddaughter, Megan Grant Swafford and husband Whit, Dallas, Texas; one great-granddaughter, Shaelynn Swafford, Dallas, Texas; an expected great-grandson, Jackson Swafford; one brother, James Grant, Morganton, N.C.; a brother-in-law, Ralph Simmons, Elizabethton; a sister-in-law, Caren Grant of Tennessee; an aunt, Mary Elizabeth Grant of Louisiana; and a special friend, Kenneth Perry, Johnson City. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to honor the life of Gary Dale Grant will be conducted at 6 p.m. Wednesday, December 3, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Marvin Slagle and Rev. Joe Alvarado officiating. Music will be provided by the family. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service, or at the residence at anytime. The graveside service will be conducted at noon Thursday, December 4, in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Browns Branch Road, Hampton. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. David Fenner and the staff of Caris Hospice. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, at 11 a.m. Thursday to go in procession.
