Betty Jean McFarland

Betty Jean McFarland, 68, of Elizabethton, passed away on Tuesday, December 30, 2014, at her residence.
Betty was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Shannon and Helen Phillips Richmond. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Gillespie and Joann Avery, and two brothers, Sonny Richmond and Shannon Richmond Jr.
Mrs. McFarland was retired from Snap-On Tools as an inspector. She was a member of Phillippi Baptist Church. She enjoyed her family, Elizabethton Cyclones football and singing in the choir.
Survivors include her husband, Clifton “Boney” McFarland, of the home; a son, Robert McFarland, Knoxville, Tenn.; a daughter, Sandy Gordon and husband Rosco, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Jordan McFarland, Knoxville, Tenn., Taylor Layne McFarland, Greeneville, Tenn., and Gabe Gordon, Jason Gordon and Caitlin Gordan, all of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; four sisters, Bernice Myrick, Pauline Neeley and Margaret Hagler, all of Elizabethton, and Hildred Davis and husband Frank of New York; and two brothers, George Richmond and wife Joyce, and Richard Richmond and wife Faye. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to honor the life of Betty Jean McFarland will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 3, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Joseph Hollifield, Rev. Ernest Widby and Rev. Jeanette Clark officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from noon until 1 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service, or at the residence of her sister, Pauline Neely, 127 Jackson Avenue, at anytime. The graveside service will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to Phillippi Baptist Church, 200 East M Street, Elizabethton, TN 37643; or to the American Cancer Society, C/O Lou Cooter, 415 Washington Avenue, Elizabethton, TN 37643.
