ELKHART, Ind. — Joyce L. Pierce, 81, of Elkhart, passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2015, at Riverside Village. She was born September 30, 1933, in Shell Creek, Tenn., to Oscar and Fannie (Presnell) Calhoun.
She married Billy Ray Pierce, who preceded her in death on May 13, 1979. She was also preceded in death by a son, Nickie L. Walker, in 1978, and two brothers, H.L. Calhoun, in 2010, and Dorse Calhoun, in 1931.
Joyce was a homemaker who loved to crochet. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, singing at her church (the Freewill Baptist Church in Elizabethton, Tenn.) and listening to country and western music. She was known for her chocolate gravy.
Surviving are two grandsons, Shannon and Aaron Walker, both of St. Cloud, Fla.; two sisters, Lillian Potter of Elkhart and Lucille Powell of Elizabethton, Tenn.; a brother, Roger (Sandy) Calhoun of Elkhart; a sister-in-law, Nancy Calhoun of Mishawaka; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be for two hours prior to the 3 p.m. Thursday, January 22, celebration of life service at the Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home. Pastor Rick Pirtle from the Riverview General Baptist Church will preside and cremation will follow the service. Memorial contributions may be given to the family to help defray funeral expenses.
