Helen Vernelle Crumley, 94, passed away on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2015, in Marietta, Ga. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Paul Crumley, who died on April 5, 1991. Also preceding her were her mother, Della Casteel, and her father, William Edward Casteel; three brothers, Everett, Ray and Glen Casteel; and a sister, Opal Irene Mays.
Mrs. Crumley, who grew up in Greene County, Tenn., married her high school sweetheart and moved to Elizabethton, Tenn., for 51 years. Mrs. Crumley was a member of First Baptist Church of Elizabethton. She was very active in community organizations and a charter member of the Elizabethton Women’s Club. She was also a hospital volunteer for many years. She was a homemaker and a wonderful cook. Her passions included growing flowers, visiting friends, traveling, but most of all, family. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Crumley is survived by a daughter, Paulette Blevins and husband Gary; a son, Lynn W. Crumley and wife Nancy; grandchildren, Alan Blevins and wife Susan, David Blevins and wife Kelly, Allison Crumley Checchi and husband Adam, and Kevin Crumley and wife Jessica; great-grandchildren, Will and Gage Blevins, Chloe and Brody Blevins and Colton, Caitlyn and Caroline Checchi; a sister, Lucille Johnson; and a sister-in-law, Edna Casteel Young. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
A graveside service to honor the life of Mrs. Helen Vernelle Crumley will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 11, at Cross Anchor Cemetery in Greene County. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery (directions to follow) at 10:50 a.m. Saturday. Following the graveside service, family and friends are invited to attend Ottway United Methodist Church (directions to follow) for a luncheon and a time of sharing memories. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Manor Care Rehab and Nursing Facility, no words can express the family’s gratitude for all their loving care. Directions to Cross Anchor Cemetery: From Interstate 81: Take exit 36 at Baileyton and go south on Highway 172 toward Greeneville. Go about 5-6 miles and turn left on Babbs Mill Road. Go about 1/4 mile and you will be at Mt. Pleasant Cumberland Presbyterian Church and Cross Anchor Cemetery. The grave is in the right side of the cemetery. Directions to Ottway United Methodist Church: Go back to Route 172 (Baileyton Road) turn left and then take an immediate right onto Ottway Road. Go 2.6 miles and you will see Ottway United Methodist Church on the right. The address is 2650 Ottway Road.
