The accident happened around 9:15 p.m. on Crabtree Road while Avery County Sheriff’s Department officers were pursuing a suspect according to radio transmissions from Carter County 911. Dispatchers were relaying information on the vehicle’s position from the Avery County officers to Carter County Sheriff’s Department Officers who were responding to assist in stopping the fleeing vehicle.
A 911 dispatcher told responding emergency personnel that the vehicle ran off the roadway into a tree. Carter County Sheriff’s Department officers on the scene reported back to 911 that one person was dead at the scene and another was trapped inside the vehicle. The officer also requested to have Tennessee Highway Patrol respond to investigate the crash.
Members of the Carter County Rescue Squad began extricating the entrapped person around 9:40 p.m. and asked 911 dispatchers to have Wings Air Rescue on standby to transport the patient to a local hospital. At 10 p.m. Wings Air Rescue launched to meet emergency medical workers at the Carter County Rescue Squad station in Roan Mountain.
At about 10:30, radio transmissions between the Rescue Squad and Wings identified the injured person as the male driver of the vehicle and said he was injured in a “high speed” crash after striking a tree. Medical personnel said the man suffered serious injuries to his head, torso and limbs.
