Robert Eugene Powell

Robert Eugene Powell, 75, of Elizabethton, passed away Thursday, July 2, 2015, at his residence.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Elijah and Mary Powell.
Mr. Powell served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era and was a retired truck driver with Harris Trucking. He was of the Baptist Faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Miller Powell, March 2, 2008.
Survivors include his children, Tammy Hopson and husband D.L., Hope Barnett and husband Dale, and Patrick Miller, all of Elizabethton, and Mary Beth Laymon and husband Brent, Greensboro, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Kelly Simerly, Jessica Dugger, Destinee Barnett, Laken Barnett, Shaye Hazelwood, Megan, Emma, Sidney and Grace; two great-grandchildren, including a special great-granddaughter Abbigale Simerly, and Liam Simerly; his mother (who raised him), Lucille Powell; five sisters, Barbara Fraley and husband Bill, Linda Garland and husband Lynson, Phyllis Crain and husband Glen, Brenda Rasmussen and husband Bill, and Cleo Hicks, all of Elizabethton; three brothers, Randy Powell, “Pooner” Powell and wife Neci and Larry Powell and wife Trish, all of Elizabethton; several nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Robert Brewell, who lived with him; and his special friend, Betty Webb.
Funeral services for Robert Eugene Powell will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Evan Hopson officiating. Music will be provided by D.L. Hopson. Graveside services and interment will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home, will be Kevin Ledford, D.L. Hopson, Dustin Simerly, Dale Barnett, Patrick Miller and Robert Brewer. Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to Avalan Hospice and the staff of the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center for the excellent care he received. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Friends may also visit with the family at the residence.
