Justin Dean “Bud” Grindstaff, of Dogwood Acres in Hampton, passed away on Friday, July 17, 2015, surrounded by his family. He would have been 86 years old on August 10. Mr. Grindstaff was born in Old Butler, Tenn., and was preceded in death by his parents, Leta Stout Grindstaff and Robert Sherman Grindstaff; sisters, Dora Blackwell, Jewell Blackburn and Ilean Gwyn; and a grandson, Adam James.
Bud was a barber and owned Bud’s Barber Shop and Beauty Shop of Hampton, Tenn., having served the community since 1955. He was a veteran of the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict and served as a barber aboard the ship, U.S.S. Laffey DD724. He was a member of Hampton First Baptist Church.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening and fixing “all things broken.” He loved having all his family gather each Sunday at PAP’s house and he also loved to fly and vacation with his family.
Those left to celebrate his life include his loving wife of 59 years, Mary Lou Odom Grindstaff, of the home; his loving son and daughter, Mark Dean Grindstaff and his wife, Shelecia, and Lisa Grindstaff James; his precious grandchildren include Seth Grindstaff and his wife, Lauren, Justin Grindstaff, Caleb James and his only granddaughter, Hannah Grindstaff; and his siblings, Kyle Grindstaff, Elsie Clark and Eldona Norris. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The Celebration of Life service for Justin Dean “Bud” Grindstaff will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Pastor Ron Owens officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the service, and at the home at other times. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 22, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Seth Grindstaff, Justin Grindstaff, Caleb James, Darryl Hendrix, Robbie Norris, Jimmy Blackburn and Kit Lunceford. Honorary pallbearers will be J.L. Norris and I.G. Osborn and all “Bud’s” many friends and customers. Military Honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet the family at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.
