Members of this year’s Betsy Band, seen here practicing during band camp, will be joined by alumni of the program for a special parade on Sept. 4.

When Elizabethton High School christens its new stadium next month there will be a lot of celebration, including something special from the band, both past and present.
The Betsy Band invites alumni from the program to join in the parade from the Brown-Childress Stadium to the new Citizens Bank Stadium on Sep. 4 to celebrate the history and legacy of Elizabethton High School Athletics, Band and extracurricular organizations.
“I think it is a symbolic gesture that tradition is going to continue,” said School Board member Tyler Fleming.
Band members should meet at 5 p.m. outside the T.A. Dugger Band Room to prepare for the parade beginning at 6 p.m. led by Band Director Perry Elliot. Opening ceremonies will take place after the parade, followed by a football game against Johnson County.
From Brown-Childress Stadium, to the tune of “Go Ye Ole Betsy,” everyone will parade down Holly Lane and G Street, turning on Bemberg Road to the new stadium. If alumni wish to participate in the parade or entrance to the stadium with the band, but are unable to walk the full distance, they may join near the stadium.
Alumni should wear khaki shorts, and t-shirts will be provided. Arrangements will be made for the advance pick-up of music and t-shirts.
Twenty have already committed to join in the festivities, but the invitation remains open, Fleming said. Those interested should e-mail Fleming at jtfleming@hotmail.com or call (423) 914-0394. Please include name, T-shirt size and the instrument that you will be playing. Some instruments are available from the school for those who do not have their own, so please include if you will need to borrow one, Fleming said.
