Mary Florence Stanley Hughes

Mary Florence Stanley Hughes, 76, of Johnson City, formerly of Roan Mountain, passed away Sunday, August 23, 2015, at Johnson City Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
Born to Samuel and Pearl Jones Stanley on February 9, 1939, Florence spent most of her life in Roan Mountain. She married Bill Hughes in 1956, and together they had four children. She was a homemaker and East Tennessee’s first female school bus driver. She was a two-time champion in her bowling league and enjoyed playing cards. She taught nutrition for the UT Agriculture Office and was a dedicated Meals on Wheels volunteer and a member of Keystone Free Will Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents and husband, Florence was preceded in death by a sister, Sue Rogers; two brothers, Gayle Stanley and Ralph Stanley; and one great-grandson, Peyton Walker.
She is survived by two sons, Terry Hughes of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Gene Hughes and wife Misty of Johnson City; two daughters, Kathie Simpson of Elizabethton and Angie Hughes of Jonesborough; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Judy Presnell of Roan Mountain; one brother, Kenneth Stanley of Roan Mountain; many nieces and nephews; and her best friend, Mary Lou Bowers of Elizabethton.
The family will receive friends at the home of Judy Presnell and also from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 26, at Tetrick Funeral Home, Rhododendron Chapel, 8460 Highway 19E, Roan Mountain, Tenn. A funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Terry Jones officiating. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 27, at Stanley Cemetery in Roan Mountain. Anyone who wishes to attend should arrive at the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family would like to thank the nursing and respiratory staff of the Emergency Room and 7400 Wing of the Johnson City Medical Center.
