A Roan Mountain man faces kidnapping and other charges after police say he held a woman in his home against her will while threatening to harm her and another woman with a knife.
Officers of the Carter County Sheriff’s Department arrested Brandon Coleman, 18, of 440 Tiger Creek Road, Tuesday morning and charged him with kidnapping and two counts of aggravated assault.
Around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sheriff’s Department officers responded to a report of a hostage situation at Coleman’s home on Tiger Creek Road after a 911 caller said a woman was being held there against her will at gunpoint, according to police reports.
When officers arrived, they spoke with several people outside the home, including Coleman and two women who said Coleman had threatened them.
One of the women told police she had been in Coleman’s home and when she tried to leave he would not let her go. “(The woman) stated that when she attempted to leave, Mr. Coleman started coming at her with a knife,” CCSD Sgt. Brian Durham said. “(Another woman), who was also inside the residence, stated that she was also threatened by Brandon with a knife.”
The women told officers Coleman had made threats to harm them and himself, Durham said. “(The second woman) stated that Brandon finally agreed to let her leave to call 911 because he wanted law enforcement to shoot him,” Durham said.
After speaking with Coleman, officers transported him to a local hospital for an evaluation. After he was cleared by medical personnel, officers took Coleman to the Carter County Detention Center where he was booked in.
Durham charged Coleman with one count of kidnapping due to him allegedly refusing to allow the woman to leave his home and two counts of aggravated assault due to Coleman allegedly threatening to harm the two women with the knife.
Coleman is scheduled to be arraigned in Carter County General Sessions Court today. He is being held at the detention center under a $25,000 bond.
