This week, students at West Side Elementary will show off their Wildcat and Cyclone spirit during Homecoming Week with “Dress-up Days,” and concluding with a Friday tailgate day dedicated to Jesse Hardin.
The Friday tailgate, set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the track side field (or in the gym if it rains), students will compete in a tug of war and a “Where’s Tuffy?” contest as well as enjoying lunch and free ice cream from Dairy Queen.
Students are encouraged to wear some of Hardin’s favorite attire: camouflage, hunting or fishing attire, basketball or baseball jerseys/uniforms.
“Jesse loved the outdoors so let’s enjoy our time together at the Tailgate Party while remembering him!” said P.E. Teacher Chrystalyn VanHuss.
Each grade level will collaborate to hide a laminated paper “Tuffy”— the Elizabethton High School mascot — in a three-tent school spirit display. They may use copies of the image, but may not laminate any like the original.
Principal John Wright will visit each grade level’s tent in a timed attempt to find their hidden Tuffy. Wright will not be allowed outside till each grade’s display is complete.
“This is a big tradition that we’ve done year after year, “ said Wright.
Parents are invited to begin decorating tents at 8 a.m. Friday, but are asked not to bring outside food or desserts. Children may bring packed lunches or may get a bag lunch from the cafeteria.
Homecoming week winners will be announced, including the most spirited teacher, and the most spirited class from each grade, who will win a pizza party.
