Each year nearly 4,000 people celebrate Halloween at the Roan Mountain State Park Campground. This free event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 24 from 6-9 p.m.
Haunted hayrides, kids games and a bonfire are just part of the excitement. Kids get to go from campsite to campsite trick-or-treating and checking out the impressive decorations at each.
Park Manager J.R. Tinch said that in the past, some campers go all out decorating their sites and that some have haunted mazes or themed campsites. One family last year, he said, had a pirate ship, and they were all dressed like pirates and talking like pirates through the night.
“It gets real fanatic, and it’s pretty cool to come see what all everybody comes up with,” said Tinch.
Campers compete for the best decorated campsites, and prizes will be awarded to winners like free two-night stay in the campground.
Tinch said people reserve campsites a year in advance and that all spots are taken, but that most people come just to enjoy the festivities. He said that campers began decorating their sites days ago to welcome visitors with a spirited evening of family fun.
“Its’ for anybody and everybody that wants to come,” said Tinch.
Some food vendors will be present selling bloomin’ onions, funnel cakes and hot dogs.
Pets are welcome on a leash. Remember to wear a costume and to bring a bag for treats.
