West Side Elementary was deemed one of 170 statewide Reward Schools for the 2014-2015 school year for its academic performance. On Monday, students spent the day celebrating their achievements with inflatables, a climbing wall, a movie and other festivities.
“This is huge,” said Principal John Wright. “We are ranked in the top five percent of the state, and kids need to know what a big deal this is. This celebration is a small thank you for them.”
In literacy, the school received a five on its Tennessee Value-added Assessment System score, signifying that it exceeded expected growth. It achieved expected growth in “numeracy” and “overall,” scoring threes, and a four in “literacy and numeracy.”
Its Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) scores show that over 40 percent of 3rd through 8th grade students’s scores showed proficiency in math, reading and science, and that 20 percent or more scored advanced in each subject. Less than two percent of students scored below basic in any subject.
“We’ve been a reward school three times since 2010, and it’s a big challenge to earn that,” said Wright.
He added that the focus this year has been on reading and writing — skills that translate to achievement across the board. Additionally, he said 5th grade math scores were higher than ever this year.
“Hard work, high expectations and consistent parent support are huge here,” said Wright. “The key to our success is that when we ask students to do something, parents back it.”
The school has also invested in professional development for teachers.
“We have wonderful teachers, and we want to make sure they are prepared,” said Wright.
The Parent Teacher Advisory Council, which sponsored the celebration, will reward the teachers with a lunch at the Coffee Company this week.
Hunter Elementary was also recognized as a Reward School for its value added-growth.
