Fred “Sonny” Shoun

Fred “Sonny” Shoun, 78, of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord, on Sunday, December 20, 2015, at Life Care Center of Gray, following an extended illness. He was born in Vivian, W.Va., the son of the late Fred H. and Virginia Cannaday Shoun, and had lived most of his life in Carter County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
Mr. Shoun was a 1955 graduate of Unaka High School, a veteran of the United States Air Force and a member of American Legion Post #49. He also held an associate degree in accounting and was retired from Raytheon Corporation, where he worked for 38 years. He loved to play music, he was a Christian, an ordained deacon and was a Sunday School teacher. He was also a founding member of the Carter County Humane Society.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 55 years, Barbara Moody Shoun, of the home; a daughter, Ann Byrd and her husband, J.D., Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a son, Gene Shoun and his wife, Katherine, Charlotte, N.C.; four granddaughters, Whitney Byrd, Reno, Nev., Jessica Byrd, Bowling Green, Ky., Sgt. Amanda White, (USAF), Langley Air Force Base, Va., and Katie Cingel, Danville, Va.; a sister, Virginia Coleman and her husband, Richard, Elizabethton; special friends, Brenda and Darrell Cannon, Elizabethton, and Jason and Sara Cox, Elizabethton; his beloved dog, Lulu, and Lulu’s two doggie friends, Sidney and Sambo. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to honor the life of Fred “Sonny” Shoun will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, December 22, in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace, with Rev. Ray Colbaugh officiating. Music will be under the direction of his son, Gene Shoun, and his granddaughter, Katie Cingel. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the service, or at the home at other times. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 23, in the Garden of Freedom of Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Lynn Peters, Darrell Cannon, Jeff Oliver, Bill Crow, Donnie Dykes and Henry Shoun. Honorary pallbearers will be Curtis Huskins, Glen Shoun, Rich Coleman, Bob Cable, Leonard Febuary, Dr. Paul Knapp, Alan Self and Dr. Don Marshall. Military Honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet the family at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday to go in procession to the cemetery.
