Dorothy “Tiny” Garland Mitchell

Dorothy “Tiny” Garland Mitchell, 82, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 3, 2016, from Pine Ridge Care Center, following an extended illness. Dorothy was a native of Sullivan County, Tenn., and a daughter of the late James Spurgeon Smith and Verna Perry Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Verdell Garland, and her second husband, Billy Joe Mitchell.
Dorothy retired as a seamstress at East Tennessee Undergarment and was an active member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening and was an avid walker.
Those left to cherish her memory include three daughters, Debbie Peters and her husband C.J., of Elizabethton, Kim Garland, also of Elizabethton, and Pamela Collins and her husband Terry, of Flat Rock, N.C.; one son, Chris Garland and his wife Kaye, of Elizabethton; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four sisters; and five brothers. Several nieces and nephews also survive, along with her special friends, Betty Bristol and Betty Novella.
A service to honor the life of Mrs. Dorothy “Tiny” Garland Mitchell will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 6, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Doug Hinshaw and Rev. Charlie Biggs officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 1 until 2 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service. The graveside service will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery in Bluff City, Tenn. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the doctors and staff of Pine Ridge Care Center for the love and care given to Mrs. Mitchell during her illness, especially April, Suzanne and James. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, 207 North Boone Street, Johnson City, TN 37601.
