Cloudland and North Greene split games

    The Cloudland Highlanders traveled to Baileyton Friday night to take on the North Greene Huskies in Jerome Woolsey Gymnasium. The teams split wins, with North Greene taking the girls win, and Cloudland boys taking that win.

    In the ladies’ game, the Lady Huskies came out on fire, connecting on three three-pointers in the first quarter alone. The Lady ‘Landers answered with jumpers from Shian Strickland and a couple of treys from junior Lisa Ellis. However, the Lady Huskies jumped out to a nine point lead by the end of the first quarter.

    Cloudland’s freshman Megan Lunsford opened the second quarter scoring with a ten-foot jumper. Freshman teammate Trinity Vines then went to work scoring a foul shot, a rebound and put back, and then a block shot off a feed from Lunsford. North Greene’s Lauren Baxter then cut loose and scored eight of her team’s sixteen second quarter points. Cloudland cut North Greene’s lead to two points halfway through the period when Strickland swished a deep three, but North Greene’s Kristen Payne and Katelyn Weems combined to put their lead up to 11 at the half.

    The teams traded buckets in the third quarter, with Cloudland’s Payton Johnson and Ellis scoring all of CHS’s points. For North Greene, Baxter and Taylor Payne combined for 11 of NG’s 18 third quarter points.

    In the final quarter, Cloudland’s Vines, Strickland, P. Johnson, and Ellis sank buckets, but it wasn’t enough. The Lady Huskies took the win, 73-50.

BOYS

    In boys’ play, the first quarter was a low-scoring affair. Cloudland’s Dalton Vines scored first off of a pass from Preston Benfield. Neither team scored again until the 3:39 mark on the clock, and North Greene’s German exchange student, 6’7” Finn Wilezek sank a jumper. The score was tied at two until Highlander Jesse Potter sank a bucket. North Greene’s Cameron Freshour swished a trey at the 2:34 mark, and Jared Weems hit a lay-up. Cloudland’s Josh Blair hit a jumper, and the first quarter score was North Greene 7, Cloudland 6.

    The Highlanders opened the second quarter scoring when freshman Blair scored a block shot off a feed from P. Benfield. Senior Colby Birchfield next had a spin move in the paint and scored two. P. Benfield then swished a long three. North Greene’s lone score in the quarter came from a Wilezek foul shot. Highlander Dalton Vines scored when he caught a pass from P. Benfield. Noah Arnett then drove the baseline and scored two. P. Benfield drove the lane for two. Birchfield had a steal and a layup with 38 seconds left in the second quarter to take the lead into the locker room, 21-8.

    North Greene got the first score out of the break when Wesley Dotson snagged two. P Benfield then had a rebound and a put back for CHS, followed by a steal and layup; he scored 11 of his game high 22 points in the third. The Huskies’ Ethan Harmon and Freshour then sank a trey each. In the last half of the quarter, P. Benfield and Vines combined for the next ‘Landers’ eight points. CHS led at the end of three, 39-19.

    In the final frame, North Greene’s Avery Weems scored eight points for the home team, but the Highlanders took the win, 49-31.

    For CHS, Vines had five rebounds, and P. Benfield had six rebounds and five assists. Blair tallied four boards.
