Haldred Herbert “Doot” Buck, 76, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 7, 2016, from his home in Roan Mountain, Tenn., after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was the son of the late Wheeler and Bonnie Buck. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Peter Buck, Clark Buck and Elsie Buck, and a sister, Gaye Buck.
“Doot” was employed by the Carter County School System as a bus driver for 17 years. He was a member of the American Legion and the V.F.W. During his military service, he served as a medic in the Korean Conflict. He was very active in his community and happily made himself available physically, emotionally and spiritually to anyone in need. His greatest joy was giving to others. “Doot” was very knowledgeable of the Bible and could quote many verses from memory. He enjoyed sharing his faith. One of his favorite places to visit was the nursing home where he liked to cheer every one up, especially his Aunt Carrie Buck and his good friend, Dan Winters.
He was a very active member of Lower Shell Creek Christian Church until his recent illness. He participated in the construction of the New Lower Shell Creek Christian Church. In addition to his monetary gifts, he volunteered his time and labor and enjoyed mowing the lawn for several years.
“Doot” was well known for his tremendous sense of humor. He loved to share jokes at Jon’s Barber Shop, the V.A., at church and any place where there was a “listening ear.” He will be greatly missed by family and friends who knew him.
Those left to cherish his memory include three brothers, Harvey Buck and wife Lois, Gene Buck and wife Sheila, all of Roan Mountain, Tenn., and Edward Buck and wife Irene “Onie,” Vinton, Va.; and three sisters, Mozella Wallenfelsy, Front Royal, Va., Frankie Lou Hodge and husband R.J., Overland Park, Kansas, and Frances McCurry and fiancé Danny Jones, Newland, N.C. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family would like to express a special thank you to his sister-in-law, Lois Buck, for all the wonderful meals; his nephew, Jon Buck, who helped with his care; his church family and friends who sent cards or visited.
It was “Doot’s” wishes to be cremated and a celebration of his life will be held at 3 p.m. at the Lower Shell Creek Christian Church, Roan Mountain, Tenn., on Saturday, March 12, with Mr. Gerald Holly, minister, officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 2 until 3 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service. “Doot” requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Lower Shell Creek Christian Church, Building Fund, 8726 Highway 19E, Roan Mountain, TN 37687.
