Larry “Jug” McKinney

Larry “Jug” McKinney, 71, Johnson City went home to be with the Lord Thursday March 24, 2016 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Born March 27, 1944 in Banner Elk, North Carolina, he was a son of the late Dana Paul & Eleanor Buck McKinney. He had lived in Roan Mountain and Johnson City. Jug was a 1963 graduate of Cloudland High School. He was employed by Washington County in the Zoning & Planning Department. He was also employed by Axis Security. He attended Cherry Grove Baptist Church, Jonesborough. Jug enjoyed the 4th of July Celebration this was his Christmas. His hobby was going to yard sales. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Samuel David McKinney, and Danny Lynn McKinney and two sisters: Nancy Jane McKinney and Bobbie Jack Brown.
Survivors include his sons: Michael McKinney and wife Kimberly of Elizabethton and Chad McKinney and Nicole of Roan Mountain. A special companion: Rita Bowman, Johnson City. Three Grandsons: Coleton McKinney, and Justin Banner both of Roan Mountain and Kristopher Yarber of Johnson City, one granddaughter: Kourtney Yarber, Johnson City , One great granddaughter Pandora Yarber, Johnson City, one great grandson: Bralen Banner, Johnson City. Six Sisters: Ronnie & Dickie Street, Banner Elk, NC, Judy Sluder, Elk Park, NC, Bennie & Herbert Hoilman, and Kathie & Mike Powell all of Roan Mountain, Sharon “Doll” and Danny Benningfield , Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Janice “Tom” and Keith James, Chesapeake, Virginia. Two Brothers: his twin brother ,Garry “Nick” and Donna McKinney, Roan Mountain and Keith McKinney, Spruce Pine North Carolina and lots of special cousins and nieces & nephews.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Clark and Mr. Gerald Holly, Minister officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2016 in the Cordell Cemetery, Roan Mountain. Music will be provided by Vince Walters and Joyce Hale. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Tuesday will be: Bobby France, Jack Johnson, Mike Powell, Sammy McKinney, Todd Barnett, Sam Potter, Tim Freeman and Jonathan Powell. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Brian McKinney, Kevin McKinney, David Sluder, Jason Powell, Ed Cobb, Blake McKinney, Gregory James, Thomas James, Matthew McKinney, Scottie Johnson, employees of Axis Security and his many friends. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. To those who prefer, memorials may be made in memory of Jug to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, PO Box 1000 Dept. 142, and Memphis, Tenn. 38101-990.
