Volunteer firefighters from Hampton and Stoney Creek were dispatched just after 1:30 p.m. Monday in response to a fire spreading from a location near an outbuilding into a wooded area off Gilbert Wilson Road in Stoney Creek.
Not long after, United Stated Forest Service and Tennessee Department of Forestry arrived on scene. A helicopter dropped water on the fire as forest service bulldozers headed in to dig a containment line around the fire. Low-hanging power lines and other factors made the fire difficult to access, but dozens of responders were on scene to contain it.
At about 4 p.m. Monday, Tennessee Forestry Technician James Heaton said it burned approximately 15 acres.
Heaton said the outbuilding was destroyed, and the cause is under investigation.
The property borders Cherokee National Forest.
At about 4:15 p.m., Heaton said they were working on spot containment and said, “It will be a while before the fire is contained.”
By 5:45 p.m., he said it was controlled and would be monitored throughout the evening.
