Conway Hyder

Conway Hyder, 92, of Elizabethton, passed away Saturday, April 30, 2016, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home following an extended illness.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late J.L. and May Cole Hyder.
Conway was a graduate of Unaka High School. He was associated with his father in the operation of J.L. Hyder & Son Coal & Feed Store for several years. He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church, where he served as a Trustee.
Conway served on the Board of Directors of Farm Bureau and also was a past president. He also served on the Board of Directors of Citizens Bank in Hunter. He had served on the Carter County Planning Commission and was also a member of the Carter County Cattleman’s Association. Conway was also a farmer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Newland Hyder, April 19, 2006.
Survivors include his children, Norine and husband John Allen, and Jim and wife Adie Hyder, all of Elizabethton; three grandchildren, Jamie Allen, Holli and husband Danny O’Quinn and Cameron Hyder; four great-grandchildren, Patrick, Madeline, Dawson and Emma O’Quinn; several nieces, nephews and cousins, including a special cousin, Bill “Hartley” Hyder.
Funeral services for Conway Hyder will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Dr. Kenneth Jordan officiating. Music will be provided by his grandson, Jamie Allen, and nephew, Dennis Merrill. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park. The eulogy will be given by his grandson, Cameron Hyder. Active pallbearers will be Patrick O’Quinn, Dawson O’Quinn, Daniel Buckles, Mike Barnett, Judge Stacy Street, Mike McKinney, Marvin Garland and Larry Winchester. Honorary pallbearers will be Doyce Sheffield, Tom McKay, Butch Clendenon, Terry Gass, David Swann, Mike Nidiffer, Jimmy Street, A.D. “Sonny” Fletcher, Bill Ward, Terry Buckles, David Wortman, Charles Steagall, Dennis Williams, Chad Frazier, Lawrence Hodge, Sidney Riley, his Breakfast Buddies, his church family, Dry Hollow friends and Farm Bureau personnel. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to Dr. Jonathan Bremer, Dr. Vivian Clark, and his special caregivers, Kate Rogers, Donna Williams and Angie Cook. The family would especially like to thank and honor the staff of Ivy Hall Nursing Home and the staff of Caris Hospice. The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
