A Butler woman faces a felony charge after police say she attempted to steal more than $500 in merchandise from a city retail store.
Elizabethton Police Department Officer David Johnson arrested Kayla Jennings, 23, 615 Little Dry Run Road, Butler, on Monday and charged her with shoplifting over $500, simple possession of Schedule III drugs, and simple possession of Schedule IV drugs.
Around 9:40 p.m. on Monday, Johnson responded to Walmart, located at 1001 Overmountain Drive, on a report of shoplifting. Upon his arrival, Johnson spoke with Walmart loss prevention associate Henry Flesher, who told the officer he had apprehended Jennings attempting to shoplifting $534.02 in merchandise from the store.
Flesher told the officer Jennings had removed the price tags from several items and had concealed several items of clothing and jewelry in a backpack.
Johnson noted that when officers searched Jennings they found a metal container which contained two different types of prescription medication —Xanax, which is a Schedule IV drug, and Suboxone, which is a Schedule III drug.
