Helen “Jean” Shell

Helen “Jean” Shell, 76, of Roan Mountain, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, May 19, 2016, from the Johnson City Medical Center, following an extended illness. Helen was born in Banner Elk, N.C., to the late Gerald and Minnie Winters Carter Hill. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn W. Shell, and a sister, Nella Mae Jones.
Helen was a homemaker and was the oldest member of Roan Mountain Church of God. She loved to sing, gardening, playing with her grandchildren and going to church.
Those left to cherish her memory include two daughters, Angela Haun, of Roan Mountain, and Glenda Shell Laws and husband Paul, of Banner Elk, N.C.; one son, Jeffrey Shell and wife Tammy, of Piney Flats, Tenn.; two sisters, Shirley Guy, of Elizabethton, and Elizabeth “Libby” Heaton, of Greensboro, N.C.; one brother, Dave Carter, of California; and six grandchildren, Clint Williams, Amanda Haun, Alyssa Laws, James Shell, Jeffrey Shell II and Jonathan Shell. Several nieces and nephews also survive, including a special niece, Pamela Stout, of Roan Mountain.
A service to honor the life of Mrs. Helen “Jean” Shell will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 21, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, with Rev. Michael Lusk and Rev. Tim Hyde officiating. Music will be provided by Charlotte Smith. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service. The graveside service will follow in the Caraway Cemetery in Roan Mountain. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
