Horace Arnold “Bubba” Broome III

Bubba Broome, 65, of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, May 22, 2016. He was the son of Grace Lee Hopson Broome and the late Horace Arnold Broome Jr.
Throughout his childhood years, Bubba played many sports and was a member of the Elizabethton Boxing Team. He boxed in and won three Golden Gloves Tournaments. In later years he was the boxing champion of his battalion while serving in the U.S. Marines in Cuba. During his high school years Bubba was the starting quarterback for the Elizabethton High School Cyclones in his sophomore, junior and senior years and was a member of the Graduating Class of 1969.
Bubba received a football scholarship at Tennessee Tech University and made the team his first year; however after playing only one season he left to join the United States Marine Corps and was featured on the U.S. Marine Corps Recruitment Poster in 1972. Bubba continued to enjoy sports throughout his life; he was an avid golfer and coached his daughter’s softball and basketball teams in the 1990s.
Bubba was a member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars and Moose Lodge. He was a retired realtor and licensed real estate appraiser.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Whitney Shea Broome, in 2004.
Those left to cherish his memory are his beloved daughter, Mackenzie Danielle Broome, Johnson City, Tenn.; his mother, Grace Lee Broome, one brother, Rick Lee Broome and wife Teresa, and one sister, Tana Starr Johnson and husband Michael, all of Elizabethton. Several uncles and cousins also survive. Bubba had many wonderful friends who loved, visited and cared for him during his declining health. He will be truly missed by those who will always remember his broad smile and love of life, family and friends.
Funeral services for Horace Arnold “Bubba” Broome III will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Garry Edwards and Terry Pope officiating. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 26, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be provided by Mr. Scott Reynolds. Military Honors will be provided by the Carter County Honor Guard. The family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to the staff of Ivy Hall Nursing Home for the love and care provided to him during his illness. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request donations to the American Cancer Society, % Lou Cooter, 415 Washington Avenue, Elizabethton, TN 37643 or the Elizabethton Public Library. Active pallbearers will be John Hardin, Tom Powers, Robert Broome, Ed Garland, Tom Corbett, Mickie Mathis, David Smith and Kenneth Dugger. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:20 a.m. Thursday to go to the cemetery.
