Class may not be in session, but the Elizabethton City School system is hard at work over the summer.
The city school system’s Board of Education meeting is set for Tuesday, June 12, at the Mack Pierce Board Room with multiple resolutions on the table, including addressing the food prices at the school.
Board members will vote to approve their recommendation of lunch price increases for the 2016-17 school year at the high school, moving from $2.50 to $2.55.
According to information provided to The Elizabethton Star, the Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 requires school food authorities participating in the National School Lunch Program to ensure sufficient funds are provided to support nonprofit school food service account for students not eligible for free or reduced price meals. The nickel increase would allow the school to fall into that category. The high school did not see a raise in prices for the previous school year.
T.A. Dugger prices will remain the same while elementary schools and the early learning center are in the community eligibility program with no charge for meals.
The BOE will also look to approve the first reading of the social media board policy.
Part of the board policy reads, “While recognizing the free speech rights of employees, the Board considers information relating to the Elizabethton City School System within or communications with students through social media/networking sites including, but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Blogspot, Topix, Google+, Tumblr, Instagram or Snapchat, to be an extension of the workplace/classroom and therefore subject to the policies and procedures of the Board.”
In the policies, employees on social media are prohibited from posting different material that could create a disruption in classroom activity, using school system images, links, etc, or accessing personal social media accounts, establishing a social media account in the name of, or on the behalf, of the system or not posting “the views I express on this site are my own and do not represent the official view or position of the Elizabethton City School System”.
Employees are encouraged to use privacy settings when using social media, and not developing relationships with students, parents, colleagues or others that ‘blur the lines of professional and personal propriety’.
The system will look to manage through the meeting without a large agenda on the docket. Other items of interest for the meeting include a purchase of $18,681.84 for the purchase of Dell computers to be utilized by the CTE department at the high school, approval of various renewals of the purchase of fresh produce from Reinhart Food Service, cafeteria supplies, food, milk, bread, ice cream and other bakery products.
The system will also look to approve the fee payment of $1,600 to the Niswonger Foundation College and Career Consortium.
Tuesday’s meeting is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.
