With ideal weather expected for the weekend, Carter County Proud is offering an event to let citizens spruce up the area.
Carter County Proud is preparing for their second cleanup mission on two miles worth of Milligan Highway. The organization adopted the highway through the Tennessee Department of Transportation. The cleanup is scheduled to take place Saturday, July 9, beginning at 10 a.m.
“Citizens wanting to participate are encouraged to arrive a little early and meet at the Happy Valley Elementary School parking lot,” said Edward Jordan, founder of Carter County Proud.
Jordan encourages participates to wear long pants, a hat, tennis shoes or boots along with gloves and to bring drinking water. Sunscreen is also recommended, he added. Carter County Proud will furnish trash bags and safety vests during the cleanup.
Tennessee’s Adopt-A-Highway program is used as a way for groups and organizations that are concerned about the environment to take a proactive approach in assistance with cleanup.
According to the state’s website, the program was created in 1989 and volunteers have collected more than 12 million pounds of litter from Tennessee’s roadsides during that time.
“These valuable contributions are helping produce cleaner roadsides, reduce maintenance costs, and boost litter prevention awareness in the ‘Volunteer State,’” TDOT mentioned on the website.
Jordan told the Elizabethton Star plans are still coming for the group to pursue affiliation with Keep Tennessee Beautiful.
