Vergie Sluder Hampton

JOHNSON City — Vergie Sluder Hampton, 91, left for her heavenly home on Sunday, August 7, 2016, from NHC Healthcare. She was born August 18, 1924, in Newland, N.C., to the late Smith and Belle McKinney Sluder.
Vergie was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt who enjoyed gardening, housework and cooking. She was famous for her pumpkin pies and chocolate cakes. Her laughter was contagious and she was loved by all who knew her. Vergie was a longtime member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church where she was a member of the Ruth Sunday School Class.
Survivors include two daughters, Eileen Hendrix and husband, Jerry, and Brenda Green and husband, Michael, all of Johnson City; grandson, Chad J. Hendrix (Anne) of Challeux, France, and a great-grandson due in November; her grand dog, Briley; four brothers, Ronald (Willamae) Sluder, Newland, N.C., Ray (Sarah) Sluder, Macon, Ga., Bill E. (Pauline) Sluder, Gray, and Kenneth (Helen) Sluder, Unicoi; one sister, Gerri Hayden (Dave Barrett), Elizabethton; a sister-in-law, Bonnie Sluder, Greeneville; and an aunt, Mary Lyda Matherly, Johnson City. Several special nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Vergie is also survived by very special friends, Joe and Teresa McClain and their children, Traci (Andrew) and Lucas (Chelsea), as well as many other dear friends.
In addition to her parents, Vergie was preceded in death by her loving husband of 53 years, Glenn Hampton, on December 31, 1999; a sister, Edith Sluder; and two brothers, Robert and Harold Sluder.
A service to celebrate the life of Vergie Hampton will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 10, in the Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel, 3001 Peoples Street, Johnson City, with Rev. Reece Harris and Rev. Jayson Hoagland officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m., prior to the funeral service. Music will be provided by Loretta Bowers. Interment will follow at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 11, at Monte Vista Cemetery with Rev. Michael Sluder, Vergie’s nephew, officiating. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Active pallbearers will be Tony Young, Donnie Mitchell, Don Verran, Joe A. McClain, David McKinney and Pat Ramsey. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Sluder, Bob Clark, Tony McKeehan, Jerre Whitson, Dr. Greg Moore and her church family. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to Dr. Rachel Monderer, the loving staff of NHC Healthcare, special caregivers Marilyn Morrison and Jan Stafford, and special neighbors and friends, Martha and Letha Carr and Jean and Royce Watrous. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Vergie to Sinking Creek Baptist Church, 2313 Elizabethton Highway, Johnson City, TN 37601.
