OmniSource in Elizabethton, Kingsport reportedly discontinue operations

One recycling facility will no longer offer any type of availability in Elizabethton.
OmniSource, a company that services Northeast Tennessee, closed their facility located on North Lynn Avenue for good, according to a representative with the company’s Johnson City office.
The Elizabethton Star contacted the Washington County office Tuesday and an employee stated that the Elizabethton location, along with the OmniSource building in Kingsport, were both shut down, effective Friday, Aug. 12.
Local employees had no further information to provide on the issue.
A sign placed in front of the entrance for the former scrap yard in Elizabethton tells citizens to visit the Johnson City office, located at 110 Perma R Road. The phone number for the office is 423-928-1609.
Attempts to reach the OmniSource Corporation were unsuccessful prior to the Elizabethton Star’s press deadline with multiple calls and messages left to the corporate office unreturned. The Elizabethton Star talked to Elizabethton Mayor Curt Alexander during the morning hours, who stated that he was getting together with Planning and Economic Development Director Jon Hartman to address the issue. No updates on the amount of workers affected or the process ahead for the property were provided.
OmniSource was founded in Fort Wayne, Ind., more than 65 years ago, according to the company’s website, and emerged to be one of North America’s largest processors and distributors of scrap and secondary metals. The company was acquired by Steel Dynamics, Inc., in 2007 and operates independently as a wholly-owned subsidiary.
