With natural beauty and recreation in abundance, the Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Department offers multiple activities for residents and visitors to participate in.
The department currently has registration underway for fall coed volleyball and flag football. While the registration is pegged for Friday, Aug. 26, David Nanney, Recreation Manager with the department, said that can be flexible.
“We definitely won’t turn anybody away,” he said. “Volleyball and flag football registration is scheduled to end Friday but we can work with anybody who wants to join.”
The Parks & Rec offers a football league that features multiple six-man teams. The price per team is $260 and coed volleyball signups is at $250.
“Our coed volleyball has been popular with our local churches, it always draws a good little crowd,” Nanney said. “Our flag football is pretty popular. We have the games at Kiwanis Park and there’s always a good crowd out with friends and families supporting everybody. We’re really just one of two places, including Kingsport, that offer a flag football league.”
The department has been a staple within the community with various parks and recreational activities in Elizabethton. Having the additional resources pays dividends, the manager said.
“It’s extremely important,” Nanney said about the athletic events complimenting other options available in the city. “It vital for us to provide these kind of outlets to public to let people play, exercise and get out of the house.”
One of the more popular endeavors going on now is the adult coed kickball league, Nanney said. Participants show their stuff at the tee-ball field in “Blackbottom” across from the department’s main office. While that is currently underway, Parks & Rec will offer basketball for the winter months.
