At the midway point of the 2016 girls soccer season, the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones remained unbeaten and almost unscored upon having surrendered just one goal thus far. EHS totaled 21 shots at the Happy Valley frame and senior goalkeeper Carley Tribble was able to stop 14 of them as the Cyclones blanked the Lady Warriors 7-0 on Monday afternoon at Happy Valley Elementary.

Freshman Maggie Johnson redirected a corner kick from senior Kim Henson past Tribble in the third minute of action and senior Caitlyn Garner put a shot into the nets in the 13th minute as EHS took a 2-nil halftime lead.

“Last year here we had a similar result,” Lady Cyclones head coach Bill McClay said. “We have to learn to adjust. A field is a field and its still just soccer. You have to play the ball you can’t let the ball play you. Happy Valley is an improving team and we can’t overlook anyone. Happy Valley had a couple of quality chances that Loran was able to save, but our attitude in the first half was to stand around a lot.”

The action got much better for EHS (6-0-2, 3-0-1 conference) in the second half as they poured in five goals while the Warriors (1-4-1, 0-3-1 conference) had two solid chances turned away. Gardner scored her second goal of the match in the 42nd minute and Happy Valley allowed a corner shot from Henson to go into the net off one of their own for an own goal in the 55th minute.

HV’s Carissa Bailey had a shot turned away in the 60th minute as she fired a high shot that Campbell fielded with no rebound.

Tonight we wanted to concentrate on using our outside lanes to try to control the field a little better,” said Lady Warriors head coach Eddie Morrell. “I feel like they did a real good job with what they had and this game is a good gauge of what we need to do in the future. We have got to develop a breakout offense to be in the upper tier of this conference.”

Freshman Kaylen Shell scored back-to-back goals in the 70th and 73rd minute of play. The first was a steal at midfield and a breakaway that saw her beat Tribble low and to her right and the second was a mistake by the HV back line to clear and were unable to accomplish that.

Shell then beat Tribble once again to give the Cyclones a 6-0 lead. Senior Haley Burleson – the team’s leading scorer in 2015 – scored her first goal of the season in the 77th minute for the final tally of the match.
