The Elizabethton Police Department released a report documenting the accident of a child being struck by a vehicle Wednesday afternoon.
According to the report issued by Cpl. Doug Combs with the EPD, officers were dispatched to 103 East G Street in regards to a 15-year-old male juvenile, name withheld, being hit by a 2002 Ford Focus while crossing the road on his bicycle and receiving serious injuries from the accident.
Two witnesses on the scene stated they saw the male attempt to cross the street westbound in front of a large bush, moving out in front of the vehicle, driven by Renee M. Greene of Elizabethton. According to the report, both witnesses added the driver of the vehicle did not have time to react due to the bicyclist traveling out from behind the bush.
The driver of the vehicle added she was unable to see the child. During the EPD investigation, the officer observed a skid mark, measured at 23 feet, on the roadway, leading to the resting spot of the vehicle. A scratch mark was also observed, measuring approximately at 30 feet and 11 inches, that was left due to the front portion of the bike being caught underneath the vehicle.
The child was transported to Johnson Center Medical for treatment of his injuries while no criminal charges were cited against the driver.
EPD’s investigation determined the bicyclist appeared to have not seen the approaching vehicle and failed to yield when crossing the road.
