Central Elementary School hosted a special Celebration of Reading event on Oct. 7 to welcome the students back and reward them for their hardwork in reading more than 16,000 books.
The students at the Celebration of Reading Welcome Back to School Kick Off at Central Elementary School were thrilled Friday, October 7th, when they heard their teacher, Dr. Dawn Taylor, tell them they had read 16,489 books as preparation for the big event. Because of all the hard work that goes along with reading that many books, students and teachers were treated to a day of fun at the school.

The morning began with a visit from the ETSU Buccaneer athletes and Bucky, the mascot. Enthusiastic students got to meet and greet with the team members and pose for photos. Afterwards Anita Peters, from Books-A-Million in Johnson City, who had held a fundraiser for the school during the summer, showed up not only to help supply rewards to the school’s top readers, but also give a book to each excited student in the school.

The students were also treated to an outdoor lunch, outside game stations, visits from the Central Volunteer Fire Department, Menchie’s of Johnson City, Austin Peters, the Bojangles Chicken, and David Miller of WBEJ Radio Station who interviewed students on the air. The day ended with a rousing appearance by the Happy Valley High School Band who entertained the students with their music from the Shrek soundtrack.
“The day was a spectacular one for everyone involved,” said Taylor, who coordinated the event. “Our principal, Mr. Terry Morley, and all the teachers, staff, and PTO of Central feel blessed by our wonderful students who work so hard to earn a day to celebrate learning.”
