Elsie Marie Daugherty Garland, 102, Limestone Cove Community, Unicoi, passed away on November 1, 2016. She was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County and the last remaining survivor of her parents family, Thomas and Sabra Campbell Daugherty.
Mrs. Garland was the last charter member of the Clinchfield Senior Citizens, and enjoyed going there to be with friends twice a week until June 2016 when she became ill, and had to be hospitalized then, placed in a nursing home. She remained in her own home by herself until she was hospitalized. Mrs. Garland loved talking to about 75 people every day, making sure they were OK, especially in the winter time. She said it cheered her up and it made the folks happy knowing someone cared enough to call them. Mrs. Garland enjoyed gardening, quilting, but most of all she enjoyed going to church and singing. She was still singing in the nursing home. Mrs. Garland could always find something to be happy about. She was a member of Hampton Free Will Baptist Church.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Garland Sr., on May 28, 1970; two sons, Howard Garland Jr., on May 13, 2013, and infant son, Clifford Garland; one daughter, Barbara Garland West Muneer, on January 8, 2010; one granddaughter, Michelle West Williams; two brothers, William Franklin Daugherty and Jerome Daugherty; and five sisters, Mary and Lurla Daugherty, Sarah Chesser, Lula Campbell and Minnie Grindstaff Campbell.
She leaves behind to cherish her memories, nine nieces, Sarah Booher, Shelby Hartley and Nancy Arnold, all of Johnson City, Launa Williams of GA, Angie Taulbee of KY, Betty Godshall of FL, June Geyer of CO, Elizabeth Shultz of IN and Barbara Hoffman of CO; seven nephews, Jerry Wayne Daugherty and Kyle Daugherty, both of Elizabethton, Harley Campbell of Unicoi, Fred Booher of VA, Maynard Booher of FL, David Quinn and Larry Quinn, both of IN. Numerous grand and great-grand-nieces and nephews also survive; and one special sister-in-law, Mrs. Florence Daugherty of Elizabethton, and one very special friend, Diane Chesser.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the hour of service on Saturday, November 5, at the Unicoi Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend David Greene and Pastor James Holoms will officiate at the 12 p.m. funeral service. Music will be provided by Reverend Donnie and Sandy Harris. Interment will follow in the Garland Family Cemetery, Unicoi. Pallbearers will be Charlie Edwards, Steve Rainbolt, Robert Rainbolt, Harley Campbell, Raymond Ward and Dale Stevens. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Unicoi County Memorial Hospital, Hermitage Health Care and Amedisys Hospice Care. You treated our Aunt with love and dignity and would sing along with her, making her smile. We won’t forget your kindness and love to our Aunt Elsie and our family. Most importantly, we wish to especially thank Steve and Brenda Rainbolt, who were her caregivers for the past 25 years or longer. Thank you both for all you have done for Aunt Elsie, including taking her meals and taking her to church with you. She loved you both!
